There's not much you can do when a major video game publisher sends its legal team after you. Just ask and would-be Nintendo ROM or emulator creator. While Nintendo's case is still debatable, there are some cases which are absolutely puzzling.

It isn't just about blindfolding the main character...

Square Enix has presented a cease and desist order to Accord's Library, a fan run archive for all the works of Yoko Taro, including the Nier and Drakengard series. This has resulted in the archive announcing that it will be shutting down.

As reported by VGC, the announcement was made on archive's Discord channel. Square Enix has reportedly asked that nearly 90 percent of the site's content be taken down.

“Dearest Recorders and Observers of Accord’s Library,” said the message on Discord. “These past few years have been a pleasure, but we regret to inform you all that we’ve been contacted by the Square Enix Legal Team.

“And after some private communication, based on the outlined requirements we have come to the conclusion that Accord’s Library must close its doors by the end of the month.

“While we are sad to have to go, we also must respect the wishes of the Legal Team.”

Accord's Library was fully run by volunteers who are fans of Yoko Taro's work. If you've played any of Taro's games, you'll know that it's not easy keeping up with the lore, which is highly intricate and spread over multiple games, books, and novellas over the years.

"Beyond archiving the games' content and side materials, we also thrive to archive all kinds of related web materials: interview, coverages, reviews, videos, livestreams, other fansites," says the archive's About Us page.

"While the archival aspect is central to this project, we also have other goals like bringing said archived content to as many people as possible. This results in the Accord’s Library website to be available in multiple languages, using a system similar to Wikipedia."

It's unclear why Square Enix presented Accord's Library with the cease and desist, even though it's a fan run site dedicated to a lot of the company's IPs. Fans of the archive were saddened to learn that they have just about two weeks left to enjoy the archive.

Fans of the site have till October 31 to enjoy the site, after which, we presume, Accord's Library will no longer be available to the public.

As for the Nier series itself, back in February, it appeared like Yoko Taro was teasing a third game at the Nier music concert. Taro reportedly took to the stage and asked the audience to cheer if they wanted an Automata sequel. The word "REPENT" could be seen on screen frequently, eventually turning into, "R3PENT". Perhaps a hint that the next game could be called Nier 3: Repent.

Nier: Automata is a continuation of the Nier series, developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. It takes place during a war between androids and machines, and sees you navigate an open world as the android 2B,
